Salzgitter Launches Major Tender for 150 MW Solar and On-Site Battery Storage to Power Green Steel Initiative

German industrial giant Salzgitter Group is taking a significant step forward in its decarbonisation strategy with the launch of a new tender for a 150 MW solar power installation and a large-scale battery energy storage system at its Salzgitter steelworks. The move underlines the company’s ambition to accelerate its transition toward low-emission steel production through the integration of renewable energy and storage technologies.

Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH (SZFG), the group’s steel subsidiary, will be responsible for signing a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) for the solar electricity generated. This marks a continuation of Salzgitter’s broader push for sustainable energy sourcing under its SALCOS (Salzgitter Low CO₂ Steelmaking) programme, which aims to cut carbon emissions from steelmaking by up to 95%.

The newly announced tender seeks proposals from solar developers who can provide the full 150 MW of capacity required to complete the clean energy supply for Salzgitter’s initial green steel production targets. Interested bidders have until 22 June to submit their applications.

In parallel, SZFG is also inviting proposals for the development of an on-site battery energy storage system. The tender calls for a partner to take on the investment, construction, and long-term operation of the battery facility. Once operational, the storage system will be jointly utilised by SZFG and the selected partner, enabling more flexible and efficient use of the renewable energy generated on-site.

These tenders represent a key milestone in the rollout of Salzgitter’s green steel plans, with the first phase of production scheduled to go online between 2026 and 2027. As the company gradually shifts towards hydrogen-based steelmaking, the integration of solar energy and battery storage will be essential to ensuring both energy reliability and emissions reduction.

By aligning industrial production with clean energy solutions, Salzgitter continues to position itself at the forefront of Europe’s green transformation in heavy industry — setting a benchmark for climate-conscious manufacturing in the steel sector.
